The Deluxe Memory Man is a personal favorite of mine due to its great analog tone, the use of higher voltages to get the most out of the chips, and a large casing which is excellent for modding and adding features. This page is specifically for the Deluxe Memory Man which has around 600ms of delay time. The Stereo Memory Man has about 300ms which makes tap tempo less useful but the rest of the mods would work fine. We do not work on the newer digital models like the Hazarai model.
One of the first things we recommend is a true bypass mod. It not only preserves your tone when bypassed but will also prevent the Level knob from adjusting the bypass volume. If your pedal has a “Power” LED we convert this to turn off when the pedal is bypassed. If your pedal does not have an LED we can install one for you for an additional $10.
A common request is to have the delay signal muted when bypassed. This is great if you use the pedal for self oscillation and want the feedback to stop when the pedal is bypassed. Most people do not need this mod.
If your delay doesn’t sound quite right then it may need to be calibrated. All Memory Man pedals have trimpots on the circuit board to adjust the circuit for optimal performance. The problem is that for most pedals people will simply turn the trimpots by ear which can often leave the pedal in a worse state than before. Some pedals have as many as four delay chips with clock noise and bias trimmers for each chip which would be nearly impossible to dial in correctly without an oscilloscope. Calibration for SAD1024 x 4, MN3005 x 2, and MN3008 x 4 are all OK.
Electro Harmonix eventually designed these pedals to use a 24V power supply rather than using an internal power transformer. We offer a DC jack conversion which removes the internal transformer and installs a DC jack to allow the pedal to be powered by the standard EHX power supply. This can make the pedal more pedalboard friendly depending on the power supply, can be an easy way to repair the pedal in the event of a shorted transformer, and works great for international customers that want a vintage Memory Man but don’t want the inconvenience of a step-down voltage transformer. This modification does not include a 24V power supply.
