The EHX Freeze Sound Retainer is a simple sampler that we love but has room for improvement. Our Overhaul mod includes the installation of a tone knob, a footswitch upgrade, and an external footswitch jack install.
The most common complaint for the Freeze Sound Retainer would be how the momentary switch has a firm click. On a normal pedal that can be desirable but for a momentary effect most musicians want the switch to be quick and easy to depress. The Footswitch Upgrade replaces the stock switch with a soft switch that is easier to depress and does not have a mechanical click when activated.
In addition to the footswitch upgrade we install an External Footswitch Jack which allows you to use any normally-open momentary footswitch (such as most tap tempo footswitches) to trigger your Freeze. Momentary footswitch not included. This allows you to connect a sustain pedal from an electronic piano or use other methods of remote triggering.
Our high-cut Tone Knob allows for rolling off the treble of the sampled signal which can tame the digital harshness of the effect. Roll off some treble for a more natural tone or go all of the way dark for some droning background noise.
