The Rat is a staple for many guitar players’ tone. It is an affordable pedal with a classic crunch and is known for its midrange bite. The most often complaint we receive is to address the bass cut and the lack of LED on some models. The latest generation of Rat pedals are being made in China and are significantly lower in quality to the point that the potentiometers are destroyed when the knobs are pulled off. If you have a Chinese Rat 2 then we charge a $25 disassembly fee. If you have any US made model there is no additional charge. This fee simply covers the additional time it takes to disassemble the most recent Chinese model since pulling the knobs off will break the potentiometers. Our Bass Adjust mod is available for both guitar and bass and will reclaim the lost low end without losing the midrange bump that is part of the signature sound.
The Overhaul includes the bass adjust mod which tightens up the low end and also goes one step further to replace key components with higher quality parts to improve the tone without losing the signature Rat tone.
The reissue Rat pedals lack the LM308N chip which is believed to be the reason that the original sounded so good. We can replace the stock chip and install an LM308N and chip socket. Please confirm that your pedal does not already have the LM308N chip before ordering.
Our ATS clipping switch swaps out the diodes to change the clipping characteristics. We add a 3-position toggle switch to change between Asymmetrical Clipping, Turbo Rat, Stock (Symmetrical) Clipping. Asymmetrical clipping is often called more tube-like; but without using too many buzz words we’ll call it a pleasant variation from the stock sound.
The Clean Volume Knob is a separate volume control that allows you to add in your clean signal. Works great for electric guitar and for bass guitar.
